国立国際美術館は第11回ソウル・メディアシティ・ビエンナーレ(2021)でアーティスティック・ディレクターを務めたヨン・マ氏によるオンライン・トークを開催します。

新型コロナウイルス感染症拡大は美術界にも様々な面で大きな影響を与え続けています。当館でも展覧会開催時期の延期や臨時休館の対応をせざるをえない時期もありました。
世界中をパンデミックの波が襲った2020年以降、国内外で開催された国際芸術祭も同様です。ソウル・メディアシティ・ビエンナーレは光州、釜山とともに韓国を代表する国際展の一つであり、ソウル市立美術館が主催して隔年毎に開催されます。第11回展は、ヨン・マ氏をアーティスティック・ディレクターに迎え当初は2020年に開催予定でしたが、1年の延期を余儀なくされ2021年9月8日から11月21日まで「One Escape at a Time」をテーマに開催されました。日本からは映像作家の山城知佳子が参加しました。

このところの渡航の厳しさもあって日本国内からは鑑賞機会を得ることが難しかった海外で開催された国際展ですが、今回のトークではヨン・マ氏がテーマにかかげた「One Escape at a Time」について、またパンデミックの状況下で開催された同ビエンナーレについてご紹介いただきます。

現在ヘイワード・ギャラリー（英ロンドン）でキュレーターを務める。2021年9月にソウル市立美術館などで開催された第11回ソウル・メディアシティ・ビエンナーレ「One Escape at a Time」のアーティスティック・ディレクター。その就任前はポンピドゥー・センター（仏パリ）の現代美術・プロスペクティヴクリエイション部門のキュレーターを務め、ツァオ・フェイ個展「HX」（2019）の企画、グループ展「Chine-Afrique」（2020）「Global(e) Resistance」(2020-2021)の共同企画を行なった。以前はM+（香港）のアソシエイト・キュレーターとして、同機関の映像作品コレクションの形成に寄与した(2011-2016)。M+在籍中はシリーズ「M+ Screenings」(2016-)や、「Mobile M+: Moving Images」(2015)なども担当。ヴェネチア・ビエンナーレ香港パヴィリオンの共同キュレーターを2度務めており、2009年にはパク・シュウン・チュエンを、2013年にはリー・キットの個展を実施。

It is with great pleasure that the National Museum of Art, Osaka presents an online talk with Yung Ma, who served as the artistic director of the 11th Seoul Mediacity Biennale in 2021.

The spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to exert a major impact on various aspects of the art world. For example, there have been periods when it proved necessary for this museum to postpone exhibitions and temporarily close the facility.

International art festivals in Japan and abroad have similar situations since several waves of the pandemic began to hit all over the world in 2020. Along with the Gwanju and Busan Biennale, the Seoul Mediacity Biennale is one of South Korea’s most prominent international exhibitions. It is normally held every other year at the Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA). Although the 11th edition (with Yung Ma as artistic director) was originally scheduled for 2020, the event had to be pushed back one year. Based on the theme “One Escape at a Time,” the biennale was ultimately held from September 8 to November 21, 2021, and included the work of the Japanese video artist Yamashiro Chikako among many others.
Recently, travel restrictions and other factors have made it difficult for Japanese viewers to see international exhibitions in other countries. In this talk, Yung Ma discusses the theme of the 11th Seoul Mediacity Biennale, and sheds light on how the event under pandemic conditions.

Yung Ma
Yung Ma is currently serving as Curator at Hayward Gallery in London. He previously served as the Artistic Director of One Escape at a Time, the 11th edition of the Seoul Mediacity Biennale, which opened in September 2021 at Seoul Museum of Art and other locations across the city. Before that appointment, he served as Curator of the Contemporary Art and Prospective Creation Department at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, where he organised the solo exhibition HX by Cao Fei (2019), and has also co-organised the group exhibitions Chine-Afrique (2020) and Global(e) Resistance (2020 - 2021). He was previously Associate Curator of Moving Image at M+, Hong Kong (2011–16), where he was tasked to develop the institution’s moving image collection. While at M+, he also conceived the series M+ Screenings (2016–) as well as exhibitions such as Mobile M+: Moving Images (2015). He has twice served as Co-Curator of the Hong Kong Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, in 2009 with the solo presentation of Pak Sheung Chuen and 2013 with the solo presentation of Lee Kit.
