Collection 2 is presented in conjunction with a special feature titled The Imaginative Power of the 21st Century and Collection Highlights, a two-part exhibit on display throughout the year.

A quarter of this century has nearly passed. At the time that the turbulent 20th century was coming to an close, who could have predicted the kind of developments that would emerge in the years ahead? Just as dramatic changes in world affairs were completely unthinkable at the dawn of the 21st century, people’s values and worldviews inevitably underwent unexpected changes. At this point, we have had the chance to see countless works that were born in the current era. Looking back at art of the last 25 years might be described as the first step in confirming a new millennium in human history. Searching for the world within art and art within the world enables us to reflect on where we are now and where we are headed in the future. This exhibition was conceived with this in mind.

In the Collection Highlights, we introduce some of the most prominent pieces from the National Museum of Art, Osaka collection as well as some of the most recent acquisitions. By retracing art from the late 19th to the early 20th century, dating back to artists such as Paul Cézanne and Max Ernst, we are likely to discover aspects of modern and contemporary art. Recently acquired works by Joseph Beuys, Takashi Murakami, Maureen Gallace, and Maria Farrar will also be on view here for the coming year.
